Consols Pond, St Ives, Cornwall

For around ninety years the families of St Ives have enjoyed the tradition of sailing model boats at Consols Pond on Good Friday.

The tradition began in the early 1900s, when fisherman and children sailed model boats in the town's harbour. It is thought to be a gesture to the old seafaring communities which used to launch miniature boats in the hope of ensuring safe passage for mariners.

Nature's Waking Up!

Recent weed clearance in the pond, saw all kinds of creatures landing in the small boat we were using for the job.
We had newts; dragonfly larve; damselfly nymphs; flatworms; pond snails and water boatman, to name but a few!
It's fantastic to see the pond teaming with life, just one year on from the major clearance work that was carried out.
There is already some spawn in the pond, but I would like to remind people not to take it away! Even more importantly, please don't add anything - not wildlife or plants to the pond. It spreads diseases and it is illegal!!
We hope to run some pond dipping workshops in the near future - so watch this space.

Lastest news from Consols Pond

More wonderful news regarding the continued regeneration of the Pond. Brown trout have now been seen feeding and jumping out of the water; and even better than that, there is a Kingfisher regularly visisting the Pond! How fantastic is that?

Following a bird watching session to see the Kingfisher, my eleven year old daughter Chloe was inspired to ask if Consols Pond Association could form a Junior Member Group called 'Kingfishers'. Chloe put together a proposal which was presented to the committee at their meeting on Wednesday 3rd November. The committee were very impressed with Chloe's proposal, stating that engaging children was vital for the sustainability of the Pond and for the environment in general. It was decided to move the idea forward with a view to getting the group up and running early in the New Year.

Consols Pond Association will be holding a:

Coffee Morning
on Saturday 20th November
at The Western Hotel,
Royal Square, St Ives
between 10 - 12
Great raffle prizes, tombola, cake stall
Tea & Coffee
Please come along and support us!

AGM - 11th August 2010

Our AGM saw Terry Tonkin, a valued member of the committee, stand down due to other commitments, many thanks to Terry for all his help and support. All other committee members were voted back for another year and they would like to take this opportunity to 'Welcome' Suzanne Tanner who fills the vacancy left by Terry's departure.

Big Lottery Funding!

Wow! What Fantastic News!
Consols Pond Association has secured over £9,000 of Big Lottery Funding! These funds will allow the Association to construct a decked platform to facilitate access for all on the Zennor road side of the pond. Giving everyone in the community the opportunity to push boats out on Good Friday and to do pond dipping in order to study the diverse range of creatures living in the pond. What this space for progress reports!

Life Returns to the Pond

Life is definately returning to the Pond - On Monday I was delighted to see a small fish, a newt and some tadpoles!!!!!!!!!!!
There is also plenty of insect life - pond skaters, water boatmen and the flys over the water have attracted swallows - isn't nature wonderful?
Work has begun on the bank in order to make it ready for an event planned for the end of July - WATCH THIS SPACE!!

May - What's the latest?

Thankfully the algae problem seems to have settled at little, at least it's not getting any worse! And the concern about blue/green algae seems to no longer be a worry.

Looking ahead, this month should see us putting in our funding applications. Fingers crossed for this as almost all our plans hinge on us securing these funds.

Volunteers will be asked to work on the bank on the Chapel side of the pond in June, ahead of a Fun Day that we are hoping to hold in conjunction with Hellesveor Chapel at the end of July.

Watch this space for further updates!
