Consols Pond, St Ives, Cornwall

For around ninety years the families of St Ives have enjoyed the tradition of sailing model boats at Consols Pond on Good Friday.

The tradition began in the early 1900s, when fisherman and children sailed model boats in the town's harbour. It is thought to be a gesture to the old seafaring communities which used to launch miniature boats in the hope of ensuring safe passage for mariners.

Nature's Waking Up!

Recent weed clearance in the pond, saw all kinds of creatures landing in the small boat we were using for the job.
We had newts; dragonfly larve; damselfly nymphs; flatworms; pond snails and water boatman, to name but a few!
It's fantastic to see the pond teaming with life, just one year on from the major clearance work that was carried out.
There is already some spawn in the pond, but I would like to remind people not to take it away! Even more importantly, please don't add anything - not wildlife or plants to the pond. It spreads diseases and it is illegal!!
We hope to run some pond dipping workshops in the near future - so watch this space.
